Samulnori is a modern form of traditional Korean music created in 1978.

The word 사물 means 'four objects'/

It features four percussion instruments:

the kkwaenggwari (small gong), janggu (hourglass-shaped drum), buk (large drum), and jing (large gong).

Each instrument represents a sound from nature.

  • Kkwaenggwari: A small metal gong, symbolizing thunder.
  • Janggu: A drum with leather on both sides, representing rain.
  • Buk: A large drum, symbolizing clouds.
  • Jing: A large metal gong, representing the wind.

Those instruments make dynamic rhythms and strong beat.

Samulnori developed from Nongak, a traditional farmers' music, called 농악.

The main difference is that Samulnori uses fewer instruments and is performed on a stage,

while Nongak is usually played outdoors in villages or on the streets.
